VYCC summer job opportunity

VYCC will receive funding this summer to hire six Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Crew Members who will work on the Farm at VYCC. This is a great opportunity for youth who would benefit from a structured summer job. U-32 can have 2 students!

Crew Members will work on the farm and will learn a lot about farming. More importantly, they will obtain a set of basic workforce skills that will be useful and transferable to any future employment situation.

Here are details about the work:

� Dates of Employment: June 25th � August 24th Hours per day: 8:00 � 5:00� Days per week: Mon � Fri

� Wages: Minimum Wage (same as other VYCC crews) Location: Farm at VYCC in Richmond, VT

� Other: Participants are responsible for transportation to and from VYCC

Eligibility Details: An eligible youth is defined as an individual who:

� HIGH SCHOOL AGED KIDS;

� Is a low income individual; AND

� Is within one or more of the following categories:

1) Deficient in basic literacy skills; computes or solves problems, reads, writes, or speaks English at or below 8th grade level; or is unable to compute or solve problems, read, write or speak English at a level necessary to function on the job, in the individual's family or in society.

2) School dropout;

3) Homeless, runaway, or foster child;

4) Pregnant or parenting;

5) Offender; or

6) Is an individual (including youth with disabilities) who requires additional assistance to complete an educational program, or to secure and hold employment.

7) Child of an incarcerated parent

Looking for Peer Leaders for China Camp

CHINA EXCHANGE SUMMER CAMP, 2012

From June 27 - July 7, 2012, Community Connections will be hosting a group of high school students from China. High Schoolers from U-32 and MHS are invited to apply to be peer leaders along with this program. Peer leaders will attend 8:30 � 4:30 daily, participating in activities such as spoken English language sessions, swimming, exploring, field trips around the region, etc. In return for your service you will receive a letter for your college portfolio, and the experience of a lifetime. Most of our days will be held at MHS and a few will be at U-32. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

Volunteers for Peace

On Tuesday, April 17th from 10:30 am - 12:15 pm, Volunteers for Peace will have a display table in the Atrium. They will have information about their voluntary service projects available. More information can be found at www.vpf.org.

Student State Board of Education Membership Applications

Governor Shumlin's office is seeking applications from students interested in serving as a member of the State Board of Education. Vermont is one of the few states with a full voting student member on its Board of Education. Vermont secondary students who will graduate in 2014 or later are eligible to apply for a two-year term. During the student member's first year, they are a non-voting member. In the second year, the student will have voting rights along with the eight other adult members. The term for the student who is chosen will begin on July 1, 2012. Students interested in this exciting opportunity should send a completed STUDENT APPLICATION for Gubernatorial Appointment to Susan Spaulding, Governor's Office, 109 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05609-1101. QR Code Poem Contest: For all you techies who love a challenge! Download a QR Code App, then use your mobile device to scan the twelve QR (quick response) codes scattered around the library, answer twelve easy questions and win prizes. Contest runs April 2-17.

The Waste Land: Experience this stunning performance by Fiona Shaw. T.S. Eliot's poem has been called one of the most important poems of the 20th century. Showings on April 10-11 Band 3 in the library reference room.

Poem in Your Pocket Day: Find a poem you love and carry it with you to share with friends and classmates on April 17th. Need a poem? Look for the poem posse table in the atrium to pick up a poem.

VTVLC courses open for registration

VTVLC (Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative) courses are open for registration for the 2012-2013 school year. These are free online courses for students in grades 7-12. Available courses are listed under the "Course Listings" link on the left side of the VTVLC website: (https://vtvlc.org).

***If a student put a VTVLC course in her/his course requests they still need to register online for the course. (S)he can let her/his TA know and then pick up the approval form and directions for registering in the Guidance office. Other students can register as well, even if it wasn't in their initial course requests

Monopoly Tournament

University Mall of South Burlington is seeking students, grades 9-12 to participate in our second annual High School Monopoly Tournament presented by New England Federal Credit Union. Leadership Opportunity for Young Women

YW Strive offers 9th and 10th grade girls the opportunity to connect with other girls from across Vermont, network with women who hold exciting leadership roles and gain confidence and skills in a supportive environment. Author Visit

The U-32 Library is proud to host Mike Mullin, award-winning young adult author of the book, Ashfall. Mike will be at U-32 on Wednesday, March 14th for three presentations. He will begin by speaking with all EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS IN THE AUDITORIUM FROM 8:20-9:15.

NEXT UP, ENGLISH 1 AND ENGLISH 2 STUDENTS WILL MEET WITH MIKE IN THE LIBRARY REFERENCE ROOM DURING HS BAND 2.

National Youth Science Camp

ATTENTION SENIORS: Vermont Applications for 2012 National Youth Science Camp - Deadline: February 25, 2012

Applications to the National Youth Science Camp are still open for talented high school seniors! The National Youth Science Camp is a residential science education program for young scientists the summer after they graduate from high school. College Quest to Health Careers

Great opportunity for students interested in health careers. AHEC is hosting a free 6-week residential summer camp for current 11th grade Vermonters from first generation to attend college or modest income families. Yes, that is totally FREE. Additionally, students meeting certain income requirements will receive a $1,485 stipend to use towards college on completion of the 6?week program.

There is still time to sign up for semester two VTVLC courses. If a student is already enrolled in a semester two course, the instructor will send an email before the start date with instructions on how to begin.

� VTVLC semester 2 course add period ends 1/20 and drop period ends 1/25.

� If a student is interested in adding a course for semester two they need to fill out a VTVLC form from the Guidance office and make an appointment with her/his counselor.

Pico Mountain Ski Resort

is pleased to offer the Academic Excellence Program (AEP) Pico Season Pass for $39.00 & tax for the 2011-2012 season to Vermont students who meet certain academic requirements. The Pico Mountain AEP season pass provides unlimited access to Pico Mountain Resort for the 2011-2012 season.

Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

During Red Ribbon Week students are encouraged to commit to live a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. This year's motto for red ribbon week is "It's up to me to be drug free". On Wednesday, October 26th we are encouraging students and staff to wear red shirts to be a part of that that commitment. The TA that has the most students wearing red shirts will be treated to breakfast the following day in the cafeteria.

National Ally Week

is October 17-21. In honor of this, QSA students will offer events throughout the week.
MONDAY: Bake sale items for sale in the atrium bands 1 and 2 and free cards about what it means to be an ally.
TUESDAY: Free lollipops with attached messages during the lunch bands. Students and adults are also invited to design one square piece of cloth that we will put together as a QSA ally quilt.
THURSDAY: National Wear Purple/Spirit Day�Students and faculty/staff please wear purple to symbolize interrupting hate. This day is to remember the young people who have committed suicide after hate was directed toward them because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation. You will also see purple ribbons tied on door handles throughout the school to remind students to be allies and save lives.

Biological + Pioneer = Bioneer

Bioneers are engaged citizens from all backgrounds and fields who focus on solving our world's most urgent problems within a framework of interdependence.
The web of life is intricately interconnected, so too are all environmental and social issues.
Bioneers take a "solve the whole problem" approach that is holistic, systemic, and multidisciplinary. If you are a �Bioneer� and are interested in attending the 2011 convention, it is coming to the Savoy Theatre in Montpelier!!!! The U-32 Skateboard Club

is looking for used skateboard donations. If you have one gathering dust in your garage or basement, please consider donating it to the club. You can bring it/them by the Community Connections office, rm. 242.

Picture Retakes Oct. 11

Lifetouch will be back on October 11. We are going to accommodate the 7th grade field trips during TA or a little before and then anyone that needs to can bring their package back and have a retake done. If parents have any questions about what they bought, there is a paper inside the package that explains how to get in touch with Lifetouch to do this or to talk to them about problems. Anyone that did not have their picture done on the first days of school can also have their picture taken on October 11th.

Students and staff need to have their picture taken, even if you don't purchase a picture package, so if you didn't have your picture taken on the first days of school, please be sure to have your picture taken on Tuesday, October 11th.

February in Thailand

Montpelier to Thailand Eight is open to U-32 students! Students from Montpelier High School have been spending February vacation in a rural, rice-farming village on the Mekong River in Northeast Thailand for since 2005. Two U-32 students participated in M2T7 this past February and Linda Wheatley, the project organizer, hopes for that number to quadruple in 2012.

M2T is not just a trip - it's an eight month program of fund-raising, group development and getting organized. We learn some Thai, hold dances, dinners and other events, stack wood for donations, go camping and do a ropes course in the fall...and it's fun and rewarding. The prize is the most unbelievable experience of your life - being welcomed into the community, families and exotic life of Ban Pha Chan.

Library Books & Summer Reading

All library books should be returned now. We are ready to switch over to our summer borrowing schedule. Students must return or renew all their books before they may borrow for the summer. Everyone is encouraged to borrow up to 5 books from the U32 Library to read over the summer. The library will be open this summer on Fridays from 8-2 beginning June 24th. Battle of the Belts Challenge

The Vermont Institute On Health And Wellness is a nonprofit that leads week-long intensive overnight summer experiences for current high school students and upcoming freshmen who are interested in health careers, wellness, and leadership. Benefit for Autism

Come check out the Chad Hollister Band as they rock the U-32 auditorium in a benefit concert for Autism. Their high-energy, rocking performances are a must see! It will be a great night of great music and will benefit a great cause and feature U-32 alumni Johnny Mullett. The show is on Saturday, May 14 and starts at 6:30. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $15 for adults and will be available at the door, First in Fitness (in Berlin) U-32 and at Optical Expression in the Berlin Mall.

LIBRARY CLOSED FOR CELEBRATION

The U-32 Library and the Copy Center will be closed on Wednesday, May 11^th during Band 2. The library reference room will remain closed until 11:30.

Chinese I class

VTVLC is now offering a Chinese I language course for fall 2011. See your counselor ASAP if you are interested in enrolling.

JUNIOR & SENIOR PROM TICKETS

JUNIOR & SENIOR PROM TICKETS will be on sale in the Guidance Office starting on Monday, May 9th until Wednesday, May 25th. Tickets are $15.00 each. Only juniors and seniors can purchase tickets. Current grade 9-12 students can attend as the date of an 11th or 12th grade student. Students can attend individually or may purchase 1 ticket for a date. If your date doesn't attend U-32, you will need to give us his/her full name and parent's phone # at the time you purchase your tickets.

Please remember that Prom is a U-32 sponsored event. Thus all school rules apply concerning possession, use or being under the influence of any illegal drug, regulated substance, tobacco product or alcohol.

VTVLC sign-up deadline

VTVLC course priority registration for our students ends May 26^th. That means adults, home school students, etc. will begin enrolling after that date making enrollment more competitive. If you have TAs who hope to take VTVLC courses next year please send them to their counselor ASAP.

U-32 Library wins award

All students and staff are invited to attend the U-32 Library Celebration in the auditorium during Band 2 on Wednesday, May 11^th. Students must either come with their classroom teacher or on their own if they do not have a scheduled high school class. Speakers include: Steve Barrows (emcee), Governor Shumlin, Katherine Paterson, Nancy Everhart, Calvin McEathron, and Liz Gilbert. Video, flash fiction and altered book contest winners will be announced.

Back by popular demand � DEMOCRACY IN ACTION'S - water bottle sale will continue on Wednesday, May 2, band 3. Buy a reusable water bottle with a $1-$3 donation. Your money will help U-32 purchase water filters to make the fountains better, colder and tastier. Last year U-32 used over 12,000 disposable water bottles!

Serve on the State Bd. of Education

GOVERNOR SEEKS APPLICATION FOR STUDENT MEMBERSHIP ON THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION
Governor Shumlin's office is seeking applications from students interested in becoming a member of the Vermont State Board of Education. Vermont is one of the few states with a full voting student member on its State Board of Education. This is an exciting opportunity for Vermont's young people. Applicants should be secondary students who will graduate in 2013 or later for a two-year term on the Board. During the student member's first year, they are a non-voting member. In the second year, the student will have voting rights along with the eight other adult members. The term for the student who is chosen will begin on July 1, 2011. Unified Sports Fundraiser

Unified Sports� is a registered program with Special Olympics. This program pairs athletes with and without disabilities on the same team. Teams compete against other Unified Sports teams at Special Olympics tournaments. In Vermont there are presently 18 schools participating and five tournaments for Unified Sports athletes. In 2006, U-32 received the Vermont Principal Association's endorsement, and to-date, U-32 has accumulated over 500 medals!
