Debate Club:

U32 has a debate team that competes against other Vermont high schools from October to March.  The interscholastic competition involves eight tournaments, generally held on Saturdays at various high schools and then a state championship in March. The debate format is entitled Public Forum Debate and is essentially an oral communication advocacy exercise done with a partner.  Topics are of national interest and change monthly.  Debate students generally meet once a week to discuss, research, and develop arguments on both sides of the topic.  Practices involve the presentation of debate cases.  Distinctions are made between novice (1st year) debaters and varsity debaters.  Public Forum Debate is a recognized co-curricular activity of the Vermont Principals Association and is organized by the Vermont Debate and Forensics League.  For more information: Paula Emery ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. U-32 Green Team

Students on the Green Team meet to organize activities and events around environmental changes at U-32, to learn about providing effective environmental leadership in our communities, and to save U-32 money.  The group has focused on school waste reduction, composting, organizing and promoting a school wide festival called Green-Fest, and looking at transportation, local food, and plastic bottle use.  Students have participated in trash audits, lighting and electrical audits, worked with coordinators from the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District, UVM, 4-H, and VPIRG.  Many Green Team members have attended the Vermont Youth Environmental Summit (YES conference), assisted in grant writing, and some have written opinion pieces for the local newspapers.  This activity is open for grades 7-12. Presently, meetings occur during the school day.  For more information: Michael Horowitz ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Mentoring:

The U-32 mentoring program is for high school students, grades 10-12, to mentor students in grades 7-8. There is a workshop in the fall to train high school students on what it means to be a mentor. Mentors and mentees meet for at least 30 minutes once a week at U-32. Mentor pairs can play sports, board games, do arts and crafts, read aloud, work on homework, eat lunch together, or simply talk. Our hope is that mentees will gain social skills, improve self esteem, and gain a greater sense of belonging and connection to the U-32 community.
