Way To Go

CHALLENGE VS. MONTPELIER

Way to Go! Week is here and it's time to gear up to crush some carbon! Way To Go week is a chance for you and our school to go toe to toe against carbon pollution and win. Bike, walk, carpool or ride the bus to victory! Win prizes, have fun-and help us reach our goal of reducing 500,000 lbs of carbon pollution.

The Way to Go School Challenge dares you to be the greenest and cleanest school in Vermont. By encouraging students and families to choose a clean commute option we can have a real impact on reducing harmful vehicles emissions that are emitted into our environment.

U-32 vs. MHS....the faculty staff portion is on-line...register at waytogovt.org. The student portion, the challenge against Montpelier High school is going to be based on ONE day. As coordinator of the student portion of this, I have chosen Friday as our "Carbon Crunching Day." Please spread the word!! Ask your students to commute in a carbon cleaner way on Friday: take the bus (or continue to do so), carpool with a friend or ride your bike. You can also make other choices that day (and every day), to not make a trip that is not essential. We will log the # of students who are doing this throughout the day on Friday. I will ask First Student to tally the # of bus riders, both to and from school. I will devise a way to tally our carpoolers before and after school. If you are interested in helping with this Friday data collection, please let me know.

We are packing up the library!

The library carpet is going to be replaced this summer. In order for this endeavor to go as smoothly as possible, there is a new schedule for the end of the year. Beginning June 5^th the library staff will be boxing up the books, and not available to work with students and staff.

In order to accommodate the learning community during this busy time of year:

The library computer lab will be open for teachers to bring their classes.
English books will still be available for students and teachers.
The White table will run as usual.
The computers in the front of the library will be available.
All books not part of summer borrowing are due back in the library by May 31^st.
Every year the library staff encourages students to borrow books for the summer. This summer students will be able to borrow ten books for the summer (up from the regular five books). Summer borrowing begins Monday May 20^th and ends May 31st.
The last day that inter-library books may be requested is May 15^th.
As the library has done for the last several years, students will be able to return and borrow books one day a week during the summer. This year, there will be a small satellite library available on Fridays. Check the school website www.u32.org for specific dates.

Opportunities for girls and adults

TAKING LEADERSHIP TO THE OUTDOORS

Camping is a great way for girls to explore leadership, build skills, and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Whether they go for a day, week, or longer, Girl Scout camp gives girls an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults. For many girls, camp is the first opportunity they have to experience archery, horseback riding, and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming. Every girl deserves a chance to camp!

Our nearest camp is Twin Hills Day Camp in Richmond which runs for three weeks in July. We're also looking for staff. Information about summer employment is also available at the link above.

National Poem in your Pocket Day

CELEBRATE NATIONAL POEM IN YOUR POCKET DAY on Thursday, April 18, 2013! The idea is simple: select a poem you love during National Poetry Month then carry it with you to share with co-workers, family, classmates and friends. You can also share your poem selection on Twitter by using the hashtag #pocketpoem.

Come to the library ahead of time and browse our poetry collection to find a poem OR stop by the Poem in Your Pocket table in the atrium on Thursday and pick up a ready-to-go poem to share.

Yearbooks

The last date to order yearbooks online by credit card is May 3, 2013. After that date, you will be taking a chance on whether there will be one available for purchase. Pat Fair, in the Library, will be selling them until that date also. The price this year is $25.00 for a full color yearbook.

Seeking School Supply Donations for Guatemala Trip

THERE ARE 10 U-32 STUDENTS TRAVELING TO GUATEMALA AND HONDURAS AS A PART OF THE SPANISH CLASS TRIP IN APRIL. We will be doing a few community service activities while we are there (building cooking stoves, delivering goats (yes, this should be interesting), and meeting with young indigenous children). We have been asked to bring school supplies with us, if possible, to help outfit their school. Markers, color pencils, geometric rulers, compasses, eraser, sharpeners are all really appreciated. In addition, they would love used backpacks in good condition. They do not want us to bring paper supplies at all.

The Spanish students will be doing a school supply (and monetary donation) during the next two weeks. If you would look around your house, or consider a quick trip to the Dollar Store, we would really appreciate any donations that you could make. Monetary donations will be spent on supplies to bring as well. You can drop off any donations to Adam French's room upstairs.

Rosie�s Girls: Rosie�s Girls Summer Program is an exciting summer day camp that helps girls develop and strengthen their capacities and confidence while exposing them to a range of educational and career options they may never have considered. Girls entering grades 6-8 can try their hand at carpentry and arts � challenging themselves and each other - and develop media literacy skills in an atmosphere that is fun, supportive and positive.

Dirt Diva�s: a 5-day mountain bike program for girls entering grades 6-8, is designed to cultivate confidence, courage, and leadership through outdoor adventure and a supportive environment. The program combines a dynamic staff of positive female role models, technical skill building, trail rides, bicycle mechanics, environmental stewardship, community building, inner reflection, creative arts activities, and curriculum on subjects such as media literacy and body image

Fantasy Book Group

Next meeting is Thursday, April 18^th after school in the library to discuss Blood Red Road by Moira Young. Open to students in grades 8-12. See Vicky Palmer for more information.

VT Virtual Learning Cooperative courses open for registration

GRADE 7-11 TAs: VTVLC (Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative) courses are open for registration for the 2013-2014 school year. These are free online courses for students in grades 7-12. Available courses are listed under the �Course Listings� link on the left side of the VTVLC website: (https://vtvlc.org).

***If a student put a VTVLC course in her/his course requests they still need to register online for the course. (S)he can pick up the approval form and directions for registering in the Guidance office. Other students can register as well, even if it wasn�t in their initial course requests.

Cross Fit and Ultimate Frisbee

There is still room in the Cross Fit (with an instructor from the Confluence Gym) class, which meets 3-4:30, Tues and Thursday, March 19 and 21. Sign up in the Community Connections office.

Drop in Ultimate Frisbee is happening Monday March 18 and Thurs. March 21. 3:00 in the old gym.

Be Wearin' the Green

FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY. Green St. Patrick's beads will be on sale in the atrium on March 15th from 7:30-8:00am and 10:30am-12:30pm. This is an effort by our TA to raise money for our Washington DC trip

Middle School Athletes

First practices will be some time after April 1^st depending on weather. Make sure that all of your paperwork is returned by then AND that uniforms and equipment from any previous sports are also returned. Once you are signed up, you will get info on practices and start dates.

Spring Sports

All Spring Sport Athletes � spring sports meeting on Wed, March 20^th at 6:30 in the Auditorium. Come and meet your coach, hear about season info etc. Also, make sure that you are signed up for the sport that you want to play. Your TA can check that on your schedule or you can stop by the athletic offices and we can help you also. If you aren�t signed up, you need to get an athletic participation form and get it filled out before the first practice.

Vote for DCF books

MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT! DCF voting will take place in early April. Everyone will vote at U-32 but your vote only counts toward the statewide vote if you read at least 5 books. This is the perfect time to read a few more DCF books. Don�t forget READ MORE BOOKS and you will be invited to the 7^th grade versus 8^th grade DCF jeopardy game and party! The prize drawing WINNERS for this month are Rena Schwartz, Tien Connor and Aven Williams. To win simply enter your name in the big jar for each DCF book you read.

Ultimate Frisbee

Are you interested in playing some ULTIMATE FRISBEE this spring?

Come to an information and organizational meeting. Open to middle and high school, although future games would be hs or ms only for safety reasons. International Day of Awareness about Violence Against Women

February 14, 2013 is an international day of Awareness about Violence Against Women.

One in three women on the planet will be physically assaulted in her lifetime. This statistic is as true in the developed world as it is in the developing world. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

February 14th is a day to consider this staggering statistic and to start to take a stand against violence against women. Today's change music is from the website www.onebillionrising.org and is called "Break the Chain," by Tena Clark.

3 Minute Fiction

ENTRIES FOR THE 1ST ANNUAL "3 MINUTE FICTION" contest are due March 13. Contest information and rules are available at the Community Connections office or in the library. There is an after school Writing Lab, where you can work on and share your story, in the library on Wednesday, March 20.

National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), focuses public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who "implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.

STOP BY THE GALLERY TO SEE OUR CURRENT SHOW: MONSTERS & ALIENS. During first quarter, 8th grade art classes created the monsters and aliens which can now be seen hanging from the gallery ceiling. Gallery News

Please stop by the gallery on Thursday 12/6 to see a ONE DAY ONLY show in honor of Lida Winfield's visit. "What My Feelings About Learning Look Like" is a group of paintings completed by an Art Menu class this Semester. These paintings are visual interpretations of how students feel about learning. The project that these students completed, embraces the concepts of learning, realization, and expression by way of visual media. Stop in the gallery, any time on Thursday.

Camp Ta Kum Ta Bake Sale

Judy Bickford�s 7^th grade TA is holding a bake sale on Dec. 7 to raise money for Camp Ta Kum Ta, a VT camp for children that provides a free week of camping to those children between the ages of 7 and 17 who have been diagnosed with cancer. The TA wants to raise enough $ to send a student to camp. (approx. $2500). Bill Dunn, one of the evening custodians, is dying a part of his hair pink for every $500.00 donated. He�s willing to turn his mustache and the hair on his head pink. If you see him you�ll notice that he wears a picture of Grace around his neck. Grace is his inspiration as she died from cancer before camp started this past summer. If you would like you can help us reach our goal by bringing in a baked good (cookies, fudge, bars, cupcakes, etc.) on Friday December 7. We will be selling the baked goods in the Atrium between 7:45 and 1:00 for $.50/item. If you have any questions please contact Judy Bickford. Thank-you.

Venture Program

The Middle School Venture Program with Zach Schiewetz will begin a Winter Session on Dec. 11 (and run for 8 Tuesdays). If you are a 7th, 8th or 9th grader who likes to have new, fun and adventurous experiences, this could be for you. The winter session will include travel to interesting places in the wilds around Montpelier for snow shoeing, fire and shelter building and playing cool games. On Election Day

Two classes are combining forces to hold a presidential, gubernatorial and Lt. Governor election for the U-32 community. Paula Emery�s Democratic Roots and the Community Living Program, taught by Judy Bickford and Kenny Saxe, will set up a ballot box in the Atrium on Tuesday November 6 for voting for the student body between the hours of 7:30 and 1:00.

BLT--Books & Lunch Together

The Harwood wrestling team is in the 3^rd year of a co-op program with U-32 and we�d like to encourage interested U-32 athletes to give wrestling a try. Experience is not required, but a desire to challenge yourself is necessary. Below is some basic information about wrestling at Harwood. Picture Re-Take Day

WILL BE OCTOBER 19, 2012 FROM 7:30 A.M. UNTIL 2:30 P.M. If you had your picture taken and do not like the way it looked, bring your full package with you on that day and you can have a new picture redone. If you have not had a picture taken at all, you are entitled to a barcode ID or if you wish to purchase a packet of pictures, see Pat in the Library for an order form.

ALL STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO CHECK THEIR U-32 STUDENT EMAIL ACCOUNT ON A REGULAR BASIS. The use of school email will be a primary way for the administration to get information out to the student body so it is important that students check their email daily.

If you contact the tech department, you can find a way to link your student email account to your personal account so you only need to check one account.

is being held October 12th. The dance begins at 7pm and goes until 9 pm and is being held in the U-32 cafeteria. The cost is $4.00. This dance is for U-32 MS (grades 7 and 8) students only.

The next meeting of the Student Council/Class Council Leadership Group will be on Tuesday, October 9^th from 8:15-9:15am. Please let your Class 1 teachers know (ahead of time) that you will be missing class. Also, please bring a pencil/pen, great ideas and an open mind.

How Would You Like to Own a Piece of the Past at U-32?

We have no storage room so must clear out yearbooks from some past years.

We have extra 1998, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011 yearbooks that will be sold for $1.00 all next week during Spirit Week on a first come, first served basis. So bring your $1.00 by the Library Circulation Desk and pick up a book. We still have a few 2012 but in all fairness we still have to sell them at the $35.00 price that students bought them at last year.

Special Olympics Bowling

starts Thursday, September 27th. We are looking for athletes and partners to practice every Thursday from now until the tournament at Twin City Lanes on Monday, December 3, 2012. Join the fun, and be a good sport by participating in Special Olympics. Pick up permission slips and other forms (due by Tuesday, September 25, 2012) in Bonnie Chouinard's (Special Education Administrative Assistant) office, RM 107.

Middle School Venture Program

If yes, you should come check out U-32�s Middle School Venture after school program!
We�ll be meeting Tuesdays for 6 weeks in the Fall (we will have a separate Winter and Spring Venture) and will travel to natural places in the Montpelier area in search of recreation and new skills. We�ll be going on hikes, building fires, creating shelters, playing games, and having fun!

If this sounds like a good time to you, we�ll be having our first meeting on Tuesday, September 25th 2:45-4:30 in the area above the Amphitheater. Bring a small daypack and a water bottle.

Fantasy Book Group

Open to grades 8-12. Come join us once a month after school in the library for rich conversations and yummy refreshments. Our first book is Divergent by Veronica Roth. In this dystopian thriller set in a future Chicago, Beatrice Prior must choose among five factions to determine her identity for the rest of her life. Pick up a copy now at the library desk. Student Council/Class Council Kick-Off Meeting

DEAR HS & MS STUDENT COUNCIL AND 9-12TH GRADE CLASS COUNCIL MEMBERS,

As we mentioned in the class assemblies on your first day of school, we would like to gather student groups together more often to discuss issues that affect all of us at U-32. We want to hear what you have to say and hope to be able to communicate information to you also.

We would like to invite all members of the 9-12th grade Class Councils (and advisors) AND all members of the HS/MS Student Council (and advisors) to a �kick off� meeting on Tuesday, Sept 11th at 9:25am (Band 2) in the Auditorium. Your teachers will be notified of this �in-school� field trip but you should make sure that you mention it to them on Friday and Monday so that they remember it.

We are looking forward to a great school year and hope to see you on Tuesday, September 11th!

Looking for Peer Leaders for China Camp

CHINA EXCHANGE SUMMER CAMP, 2012

From June 27 - July 7, 2012, Community Connections will be hosting a group of high school students from China. High Schoolers from U-32 and MHS are invited to apply to be peer leaders along with this program. Peer leaders will attend 8:30 � 4:30 daily, participating in activities such as spoken English language sessions, swimming, exploring, field trips around the region, etc. In return for your service you will receive a letter for your college portfolio, and the experience of a lifetime. Most of our days will be held at MHS and a few will be at U-32. Applications are available in the Guidance Office.

Volunteers for Peace

On Tuesday, April 17th from 10:30 am - 12:15 pm, Volunteers for Peace will have a display table in the Atrium. They will have information about their voluntary service projects available. More information can be found at www.vpf.org.

The Waste Land: Experience this stunning performance by Fiona Shaw. T.S. Eliot's poem has been called one of the most important poems of the 20th century. Showings on April 10-11 Band 3 in the library reference room.

VTVLC courses open for registration

VTVLC (Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative) courses are open for registration for the 2012-2013 school year. These are free online courses for students in grades 7-12. Available courses are listed under the "Course Listings" link on the left side of the VTVLC website: (https://vtvlc.org).

***If a student put a VTVLC course in her/his course requests they still need to register online for the course. (S)he can let her/his TA know and then pick up the approval form and directions for registering in the Guidance office. Other students can register as well, even if it wasn't in their initial course requests.

Author Visit

The U-32 Library is proud to host Mike Mullin, award-winning young adult author of the book, Ashfall. Mike will be at U-32 on Wednesday, March 14th for three presentations. He will begin by speaking with all EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS IN THE AUDITORIUM FROM 8:20-9:15.

PROGRAM INFORMATION FOR GIRLS IN GRADES 6,7,8 - This is a 10-week curriculum based program that utilizes the power of running to provide girls the tools to celebrate themselves, honor their voices and recognize their gifts culminating in a 5k race on June 9. Poems Needed

for U-32 School poetry exhibit in downtown Montpelier. I�m collecting poems from staff members, and both middle school and high school poets for a month-long celebration of poetry, Poem City 2012. Pico Mountain Ski Resort

Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

During Red Ribbon Week students are encouraged to commit to live a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. This year's motto for red ribbon week is "It's up to me to be drug free". On Wednesday, October 26th we are encouraging students and staff to wear red shirts to be a part of that that commitment. The TA that has the most students wearing red shirts will be treated to breakfast the following day in the cafeteria.

National Ally Week

is October 17-21. In honor of this, QSA students will offer events throughout the week.
MONDAY: Bake sale items for sale in the atrium bands 1 and 2 and free cards about what it means to be an ally.
TUESDAY: Free lollipops with attached messages during the lunch bands. Students and adults are also invited to design one square piece of cloth that we will put together as a QSA ally quilt.
THURSDAY: National Wear Purple/Spirit Day�Students and faculty/staff please wear purple to symbolize interrupting hate. This day is to remember the young people who have committed suicide after hate was directed toward them because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation. You will also see purple ribbons tied on door handles throughout the school to remind students to be allies and save lives.

Vermont Girl Conference

A violence prevention event for teen girls ages 13 and older - Thursday, November 10th at the Inn at Essex Resort, 70 Essex Way, Essex, VT - A word about Girl Conference... Girl Conference is a violence against women conference specially designed to meet the needs of teenage girls between the ages of 13 to 19 years. Girl Conference tours in communities throughout the nation. Their goal is to empower inspire young women with the resources that will help them avoid abuse and assault. Picture Retakes Oct. 11

Lifetouch will be back to do picture retakes. We are going to accommodate the 7th grade field trips during TA or a little before and then anyone that needs to can bring their package back and have a retake done. If the parents have any questions about what they bought, there is a paper inside the package that explains how to get in touch with Lifetouch to do this or to talk to them about problems. Anyone that did not have their picture done on the first days of school can also have their picture taken on that October 11th day.

Library Books & Summer Reading

All library books should be returned now. We are ready to switch over to our summer borrowing schedule. Students must return or renew all their books before they may borrow for the summer. Everyone is encouraged to borrow up to 5 books from the U32 Library to read over the summer. The library will be open this summer on Fridays from 8-2 beginning June 24th. Battle of the Belts Challenge

GET YOUR TEAM TOGETHER FOR THE BATTLE OF THE BELTS CHALLENGE! On Spring Day bring your 4 person team to the car parked in the bus lane and compete with other teams to win great prizes. Teams will participate in a timed seatbelt fire drill to remind everyone to buckle up. Both students and staff are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Benefit for Autism

Come check out the Chad Hollister Band as they rock the U-32 auditorium in a benefit concert for Autism. Their high-energy, rocking performances are a must see! It will be a great night of great music and will benefit a great cause and feature U-32 alumni Johnny Mullett. The show is on Saturday, May 14 and starts at 6:30. Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $15 for adults and will be available at the door, First in Fitness (in Berlin) U-32 and at Optical Expression in the Berlin Mall.

LIBRARY CLOSED FOR CELEBRATION

The U-32 Library and the Copy Center will be closed on Wednesday, May 11^th during Band 2. The library reference room will remain closed until 11:30.

U-32 Library wins award

All students and staff are invited to attend the U-32 Library Celebration in the auditorium during Band 2 on Wednesday, May 11^th. Students must either come with their classroom teacher or on their own if they do not have a scheduled high school class. Speakers include: Steve Barrows (emcee), Governor Shumlin, Katherine Paterson, Nancy Everhart, Calvin McEathron, and Liz Gilbert. Video, flash fiction and altered book contest winners will be announced.

VTVLC sign-up deadline

VTVLC course priority registration for our students ends May 26^th. That means adults, home school students, etc. will begin enrolling after that date making enrollment more competitive. If you have TAs who hope to take VTVLC courses next year please send them to their counselor ASAP.

Student Reps Sought for VT Education Board

GOVERNOR SEEKS APPLICATION FOR STUDENT MEMBERSHIP ON THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION
Governor Shumlin�s office is seeking applications from students interested in becoming a member of the Vermont State Board of Education. Vermont is one of the few states with a full voting student member on its State Board of Education. This is an exciting opportunity for Vermont�s young people. Applicants should be secondary students who will graduate in 2013 or later for a two-year term on the Board. During the student member�s first year, they are a non-voting member. In the second year, the student will have voting rights along with the eight other adult members. The term for the student who is chosen will begin on July 1, 2011. Interested students should send in a completed STUDENT APPLICATION FOR GUBERNATORIAL APPOINTMENT application to Susan Spaulding, Governor�s Office, 109 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05609-1101. U-32 Family Fun & Fitness Night-Tonight

Friday, March 18th, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Beat Cabin Fever - Come play at U-32! All community members are invited to come to this free evening event featuring a variety of recreation and fitness activities for all ages and abilities. Students who are under 15 must have an adult present. Activities will include: Family Volleyball, badminton, basketball, ping pong, Cross-fit group exercise, circus arts, indoor rock climbing and more. If weather permits, skiing and sliding under the lights will also be open with your own equipment. Sponsored by U-32 Athletics, the U-32 PE Department, Community Connections and the Confluence nonprofit fitness center.

Date change for meeting with legislators

The date that the state legislators will be visiting the U-32 Board of Directors has been moved to February 9, 2011.

Join us at 6:00 p.m. for an opportunity to dialogue with our representatives in Montpelier about this legislative session�s education topics.

Community Blood Drive October 12

Community members, U-32 faculty/staff, and students over age 17 are invited to schedule slots to donate blood at the Student Council sponsored Blood Drive on Tuesday, October 12 any time from 8-1 in the gym. Staff who pre-schedule appointments will bypass any lines and waiting. The canteen will be stocked with the usual goodies (including sandwiches and cookies make by Tracy's talented crew).

As always, The Red Cross is in critical need of donations. Anyone in good health, over the age of 17, and carrying two forms of ID (unless you have a frequent donor card) is welcome to donate blood. The whole process usually takes about 45 minutes.

All 8th grade students to Lost Nation Theater

On Wednesday, October 6, all 8th grade students will travel to the Lost Nation Theater to attend "The Complete History of America Abridged" from 9:50 - 1:00. They will eat lunch when they return.

Magazine Drive fundraising kickoff

On Friday, September 24 from 1:30 - 2:35, all middle school students will bather in the auditorium for the Magazine Drive fundraising kick-off.

Yearbooks on sale

The 2011 Yearbook will be sold from September until December 30, 2010. We are taking pre-sell orders only this year. If you have not purchased a yearbook or placed a down payment, there will not be one available at the end of the year. Price: $42.00, and a down payment of $12.00 will hold a book. Pinnacle hike to Hunger Mountain: October 15

PINNACLE students will be on an all-day field trip to Hunger Mountain on October 15 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Unified Bowling!

Unified Bowling will begin on Thursday, September 30. Participants will travel to Twin City Lanes every Thursday through December 2. Bus transportation is provided, and will depart at 2:45 and return by 4:30. Those interested should see Bonnie Brochu in Room 107.

ZENITH 7 field trip to Hunger Mountain

7th grade ZENITH students will participate in an all-day field trip to Hunger Mountain on October 8. Students will depart U-32 at 8:30 a.m. and return at 4:30 p.m.

Fantasy Book Group

Students in grades 7 - 12 are invited to meet once a month after school in the library to discuss a fantasy novel. Our first meeting is September 30 to discuss Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Stop by the library desk to borrow a copy. All ages are welcome!
